Molecular Biology of the Antifreeze Polypeptide of winter Flounder

The antifreeze polypeptide (AFP) of winter flounder was used as a model for the studies of eucaryotic molecular biology. Results indicate that the seasonal cycle of AFP levels in winter flounder may be endogenous and regulated by photoperiod, temperature and the pituitary gland. Genomic organization studies show that there are multiple gene families in the AFP of winter flounder which belong to newer genes in terms of a time frame in evolution. Studies of these proteins and their genes may be of considerable practical value in the biological control to improve the freezing tolerance of some fishes by gene transfer techniques.
