(Purpose ) To study the clinical pathologic character of small cell carcinoma of esophageal (SCCE)To analyse the histological type classification and immunohistochemical staining of EMA、NSE、Cytokeratin、Chromogranin A,Synaptophsin by SAP method in 13 cases of SCCE.(Results)Histological type classification:small round oat -like cell type 6cases;median type 2 cases;mixed type 3 cases;basal cell-like type 2cases. Immunohistochemical staining showed high positive rates of both epithelial and neuroendocrine expression in all 13 cases of SCCE. In 6 follow-up cases,5 cases(83%) were dead in no more than one year after diagnosis and treatment.(Conclusions) SCCE is one of neuroendocrine carcinoma, which has high degree malignancy, strong invasion, poor prognosis and multiple differentiation potential. It ought to differ from other esophageal carcinoma.
