The Value of Contrast-enhanced Ultrasound in Evaluating Therapeutic Response with High Intensity Focused Ultrasound for Tumor

CHEN Jian-ke,ZHANG Wen,LIU Xue-ming,et al.(The Second Affiliated Hospital,Medical College,Zhejiang University,Hangzhou 310009,China)
[Purpose] To investigate the role of contrast-enhanced ultrasound in evaluating therapeutic response with high intensity focused ultrasound(HIFU)for tumor.[Method] Forty-two patients(60 lesions)were enrolled in this study.Fifty-nine lesions were examined with contrast-enhanced ultrasound before HIFU treatment and after HIFU treatment. The results of 18 patients(23 lesions)were compared with enhanced CT.[Results] Fifty-one of 60 lesions showed enhancement during arterial phase and 8 lesions showed enhancement during venous phase with contrast-enhanced ultrasound before HIFU treatment.Twenty-seven of 59 lesions after HIFU treatment showed no enhancement with contrast-enhanced ultrasound indicating complete necrosis;23 lesions which showed marginal local enhancement were diagnosed as tumor residual;and 9 lesions which showed intralesional heterogeneous hypo-enhancing like map indicating a little necrosis. And the result of 18 patients(23 lesions)with contrast-enhanced ultrasound was similar to enhanced CT.[Conclusion] Contrast-enhanced ultrasound can help to assess the therapeutic response of HIFU and indicate the position of residual tumor during the additional treatment.
