Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in Assessment of the Skull Base Involvement in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

[Purpose] To evaluate the diagnostic value of magetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting skull base involved nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). [Methods] Manifestation changes of MRI in 35 cases of NPC with skulll base involvement from July 2003 to December 2004 were analyzed before and after radiotherapy. [Result] NPC with certain skull base involvement was found in all 35 cases before radiotherapy. The loss of high signal of bone marrow (T1WI) and obviously enhancement after fat pressed enhancement could be seen in all 35 cases. All 35 cases showed post-radiotherapeutic condition after radiotheraphy. [Conclusion] Plain scan and enhancement scan of MRI play an important value in TNM staging and response evaluation.
