A Comparision of CT and MRI in the Diagnosis for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

[Purpose]To study the value of CT and MRI in diagnosis for nasopharynageal carcinoma(NPC). [Method] From Oct. 2003 to Jan. 2005,one hundred and seven NPC patients pathologically proved underwent CT and MRI examination. 92 staging system was carried out based on clinical information and CT or MRI data. [Results] MRI appeared to be more sensitive than CT in the diagnosis for intra-cavity lesion of nasopharynx and for involvememt of pterygopalatine fossa,infratemporal fossa,longus colli,cavernous sinus, skull base, cervical vertebra, retropharyngeal node, cervical node, but no significant difference was found between MRI and CT in detecting of invasion of nasal cavity, oropharynx, and parapharyngeal space. According to 92 staging system, MRI examination made 33.6% T staging with CT changed. [Conclusion] MRI is superior to CT in diagnosis and staging for NPC, with combined application of CT and MRI even better.
