Constructing and Testing A Competency Model of Teachers in Distance Education

Objective To construct a competency model of teachers in distance education. Methods The program had interviewed 30 teachers in distance education by BEI(Behavioral Event Interviews)technology, and then analyzed the themes of key events, complimented behavior code and compared the competency character of the teachers with different achievements. A questionnaire was established based on the model and 732 teachers in distance education were surveyed in order to verify the structure validity of the model. Then the model was applied to the recruitment of teachers in distance education to test the external validity. Results The model includes 5 distinctive competency characters and 22 benchmark competency characters. All the characters are divided into 4 groups of competency characters, individual affective traits, cognitive competence, teaching capability and management skills. Conclusions The competency model of teachers in distance education carries reliability and validity.
