The Design and Application of an Online Teaching and Formative Assessment System for an EFL Course in China

College English has been a compulsory course in Chinese higher education.Therefore,the effectiveness of College English teaching has attracted much attention.As software solutions to support College English teaching,web-based learning systems have undergone a decade of development and application.They have promoted learners' self-regulated and individualized English language learning.However,the development of the systems has also faced a number of challenges.This paper describes the development of an Online Teaching and Formative Assessment System based on the output-driven hypothesis,the self-regulated learning theory and the formative assessment theory.The system aimes at guiding learners' self-regulated learning,monitoring learners' learning progress and assisting the formative assessment by making full use of educational technology.Results show learners have a positive attitudes towards the system.The research introduces the design and application of the platform from the following three aspects,namely,the theoretical basis,its functional features and the effectiveness of its application.
