The Effect of Dietary Copper as Copper-glycine on Blood Physiological and Biochemical Traits and Tissue Copper Contents of Weanling Pigs

An experiment was conducted with 30 crossbred (Landrace×Large White) weanling barrows averaging 8.7±0.8 kg BW and 34±1 d of age to investigate the effect of dietary Cu as Cu-glycine on growth,blood physiological and biochemical traits,and Cu contents in plasma and tissues.Pigs were randomly allotted by body weight and litter to one of three treatments in a randomized complete block design,and fed basal corn-soybean meal-whey diets supplemented with 15 (n=6) or 250 mg/kg Cu as Cu sulfate (n=12) or 250 mg/kg Cu as Cu-glycine (n=12),respectively.Pigs were individually kept in fiber glass metabolism crates in a metabolism room (around 22.5 ℃) for the duration of the 28 d experiment.Pigs were allowed free choice continuous access to feeds and tap water.No Cu treatment differences (P0.10) were observed in growth rate,feed intake,feed conversion ratio,blood hemoglobin and hematocrit,and plasma biochemical traits (Cholesterol,HDL-C,LDL-C,triglyceride,and urinary nitrogen,)or Cu contents in plasma,pancreas,kidney and spleen.However,pigs fed diets with 250 mg/kg Cu added from either Cu sulfate or Cu-glycine had increased (P0.05) Cu contents in brain,liver and heart compared to pigs fed the diet with 15 mg/kg Cu added from Cu sulfate.No differences (P0.60) were detected between the two Cu sources.These results from this study indicate that Cu from both Cu-glycine and Cu sulfate was equally effective to weanling pigs.
