Comparative analysis between conventional MRI and SWI imaging of cavernous hemangioma

Objective To make comparative analysis between the conventional MRI and magnetic sensitive weighted imaging( SWI) characteristics of cavernous hemangioma,and to improve the understanding of the imaging findings of cavernous hemangioma. Methods Retrospective analysis was made in the case data of 23 patients with cavernous hemangioma who received the treatment between August 2010 and August 2012. Siemens Tim Tro3. 0 T superconducting magnetic resonance system was used for the scaning. From the aspects of the morphology performance of cavernous hemangioma,bleeding manifestations,and calcification,comparative analysis was made in the MRI and SWI imaging manifestations. Results Among the 23 cases,conventional MRI found 22 foci which displayed"mulberries"or"popcorn"like mixed high and low signals. There were 5 calcification foci and 13 hemorrhagic foci found. SWI found 60 foci including 28 calcification foci and 32 hemorrhagic foci. Thirty five displayed complete low signal,and visible"hoop sign"could be seen in 47 foci. In addition,SWI could also display another feature of cavernous hemangioma: drainage small vein around the angioma. Conclusion Conventional MRI plus SWI is the first choice for the diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma. It can display the pathological characteristics and provide basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment.
