Study on correlation between placental pathological abnormities and small for gestational age

Zhang Jing;Xu Dongmei;Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Xiangshui County;
Objective To explore the correlation between placental pathological abnormities and small for gestational age(SGA).Methods Two hundred cases were selected from the patients hospitalized between May 2013 and May 2014. 100 cases of SGA maternal placentas were chosen as observation group, and other 100 cases of maternal placentas from those appropriate for gestational age were chosen as control group. Observation and comparison were made in the placental general conditions and histological conditions under microscopic examination between the two groups. Results Compared with the conditions of the control group, the placenta quality and placental volume significantly decreased, syncytial knots and the cases of abnormal insertio funiculi umbilicalis and umbilical coiling increased, and the cases of avascular villi, villous infarcts, intervillous thrombosis, chronic villitis, and chorionic blood tube also increased significantly in the observation group(all P 0.05). Conclusion Placental gross structural abnormalities and high proportion of histological abnormities make fetal vascular damages and reduce the fetal local blood flow. Careful and comprehensive examination of the placenta can help to find the etiology of SGA.
