Analysis on position and characteristic of intracranial artery variation

Objective To explore the imaging of position and characteristic of intracranial artery variation by 3D time of flight(3D-TOF) magnetic resonance angiography(MRA). Methods A total of 816 patients who received 3D-TOF MRA examinations from January 2014 to October 2015 were selected for the study. The existence, quantity and morphological characteristics of variation of the arterial circle at the base of the brain were observed, and the relationships between variations of the anterior and posterior cerebral arteries were analyzed. Results There were no statistical differences in the ratio of dysplasia and absence of variation of anterior cerebral artery, nor in sex or bilateral difference(P 0.05). The ratio of imaging of the posterior communication artery of one side was significantly higher than that of two sides(P 0.05). For women, the ratio of imaging of the posterior communication artery of one side was significantly higher than that of men(P 0.05). The imaging ratio of typical embryo type posterior cerebral artery was significant higher than that of complete embryo type posterior cerebral artery and posterior cerebral arteries of both sides(P 0.05),and the ratio of occurrence of variation of typical embryo type posterior cerebral artery on the right side was significantly higher than the left side and both sides(P 0.05). The ratios of imaging of enlargement of homolateral communication artery and variation of homolateral embryological posterior communication artery of those in absence of section A1 of middle anterior cerebral arteries were also significantly higher than those of patients with mal-developed section A1 of middle anterior cerebral arteries(P 0.05).Conclusion 3D-TOF MRA examination performed on cerebral arteries can clearly indicate the existence of variation of cerebral arteries; the variation of posterior cerebral arteries occurs most frequently, and most of the variations are coordinated with the variation of anterior cerebral arteries.
