Objective To explore the efficacy of frontalis suspension surgery in treatment of severe congenital ptosis in children. Methods A total of 200 children with severe congenital ptosis aged 6-12 were selected and divided into two groups: the observation group(children admitted to our hospital from January 2010 to January 2013, n=97) treated with frontalis suspension surgery, and the control group(those admitted to hospital from February 2013 to December 2015, n=103) treated with upper eyelid levator shortening. The efficacy of frontalis suspension surgery in treatment of severe congenital ptosis in children was evaluated on the basis of the one-month observation over the range the upper eyelid margin covering the upper cornea, the height of double palpebral fissure and complications in these children after the surgery. Results One month after the surgery, the height of double palpebral fissure and the range the upper eyelid margin covering the upper cornea in the observation group was greater than those in the control group(P 0.05); the incidence of complications in the observation group was much lower than that in the control group(P 0.05). Conclusion Frontalis suspension surgery is safe and effective for severe congenital ptosis with fewer complications. It may facilitate the recovery of the visual function of children and is the preferred treatment for severe congenital ptosis in children.
