Effects of calcitriol on bone and renal function in postmenopausal women with diabetes

Liu Chaoren;Li Jiashi;Department of Diabetes,the Affiliated Hospital of Panzhihua University;
Objective To explore the effects of calcitriol on bone metabolism,bone mineral density(BMD) and renal function in postmenopausal patients with diabetes.Methods A total of 86 postmenopausal women with diabetes were selected and randomly divided into an observation group(n =46) and a control group(n =40).The control group was treated with metformin hydrochloride enteric coated tablets combined with berberine hydrochloride tablets; on this basis,the observation group was additionally treated with calcitriol.The blood glucose levels(PBG,2h PG),bone metabolism(T-P1 NP,N-MID),bone mineral density(BMD,T value),renal function(Ccr) and incidence of adverse reactions in the two groups before and after the treatment were compared.Results After the treatment,the blood glucose level(BGL) in the two groups dropped,but the BGL in the observation group decreased more greatly than that in the control group(P 0.05); the T-P1 NP and N-MID in the two groups increased significantly,but those in the observation group increased more greatly than those in the control group(P 0.05); the BMD indexes in the two groups were improved,but the BMD in the observation group was higher than that in the control group; the T value in the observation group was lower than that in the control group(P 0.05).There was no significant change of Ccr levels between the two groups before and after the treatment(P 0.05).The incidence of adverse reactions in the observation group was 13.0% and 10.0% in the control group(P 0.05).Conclusions To apply calcitriol in the treatment of postmenopausal patients with diabetes is good for improving bone metabolism and BMD and controlling blood glucose levels.Besides,it will impose minor impact on renal function and is very safe.
