Li Zhongyou (Plant Protection Station, Luxian)  
In Luxian, Sorghum volgare is the major host plant of foxtail millet webworm (Mampava bipunctella Ragonot), an important pest which in recent years causes heavy loss of sorghum grain yield (up to 2 million kg annually) and, as a result of raw material shortage, impairs the production of the locally famous liquor. The pest occurs in two generations annually in Luxian. Old larvae of the second generation, when brought within the bored panicle or grain, hibernate in the store-houses until they pupate in late April the next year. A few third instar larvae of the third generation may also be found, but none of them can survive the winter, hence no complete 3rd generation occurs. Dynamic aggregation of the pest in the field exhibites a pattern of negative binomial or truncated negative binomial distribution. More than 2 heads of larva per panicle may be taken as action threshold of pesticde application. Or otherwise, an action threshold may be determined according to sequntial sampling equations: d_0=1.42n-13.47 and d_1=2.44n-34.88 (light to medium infestation); or d_1=4.87n-62.14 and d_1=4.87n+62.14 (Medium to heavy infestation). Hibernating larvae are the most important control target. Field spraying of 20% BT emolson or 25% Sachang-shuang is also an effective control measure.
