A STUDY ON THE POLLEN MORPHOLOGY- AND SYSTEMATICS OF GENUS MALUS SECT. CHLOROMELES (DECNE) REHD. IN NORTH AMERICA

The pollen size of species of Sect Chloromeles (Decne)Rehd. in North America is of middle size mostly spherical, some few prolate. Parallel to polar axis are three colpi, wide in the middle but narrow at both ends. Three apertures zoniporate in the center of the colpi. So the colp-orate belongs to the type N3P4C5. Exine sculture striate-reticulate or similar-striate. No specific value among the six species in characteristics of their pollen morphology, but there is specific value of P/E clearly among them. The ratio of P/E value of M. coronaria Mill is very high,but that of M. glaucescens Rehd. is very low,and those of the other 4 species are limited in these 2 species. The P/E value may be regarded as a conference of Sect. Chloromeles in their evolution trend. The order of P/E value from high to low in Sect. Chloromeles Rehd. is from M. chloronaria Mill(1. 3657)-M. angustifolia Michex (1. 01277)-M. ioensis Britt (0. 9877)-M. platycarpa Redh. (0. 9822)-M. lancifolia Rehd. (0. 9769)-M. glaucescens Rehd. (0. 9674).
