STUDY ON THE BIOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL CHARACTERS OF A NATURAL TETRAPLOID ARBOR TEA TREE

Studies were carried out in 1989-1993 of a naturally occurring tetrapJoid arbor tea (Thea gymnogyna) tree discovered in Sichuan province. This arbor tea tree was found to be cheracterized by thick trunk, erect posture, oval leaf, kidney -shaped seed, reduced fertility, slow sapling growth and poor adaptability. Containing high levels of water soluble matter, poiyphenols and catechms and low levels of coffeine and with a high ratio of poiyphenols to free amino acids, its flush id considered to be suitable for manufacturing black tea.
