Locust Plague and Locust Spirit Belief in Xinjiang in the Qing Dynasty

Wang Penghui;
The farming society in Xinjiang in the Qing Dynasty was massively produced in the grassland area north of the Tianshan Mountains in the northwest frontier of China,and the outbreak of locusts mainly concentrated in the new oasis farming areas in the north of the Tianshan Mountains.The Temple of Eight Deities,the Insect King Temple and the Liu Meng General Temple,which symbolized the locust spirit belief,entered Xinjiang from the core of China's farming area,and the locust spirit belief,a peculiar phenomenon of the agricultural civilization in China's hinterland,became a social mechanism of the locust control in Xinjiang.The confirmation of the existence of locust spirit temples in the south and north of the Tianshan Mountains can make up the blank in Chen Chengsaing's statistics on the distribution of locust spirit temples in China.
