He Yan-hua;School of Chinese Literature, Lanzhou University;
In someway"modernity"means the breakage of the present with the past. From the perspective of afool, A Lai's The Dust Has Settled depicts the process of the rise and fall of a headman's family, showing theloss of the people's identity in the process of breakage from the older society, politics, economy, people, valuesand life style as well as the confusion and inability to the approaching historical transformation. It is through thiskind of modernity that The Dust Has Settled displays the beauty of confusion in poetic narration, beauty of revel-ry in high modernity, beauty of blending of image and movies and the beauty of magic originated from the folknarration.
