The Difference between Sway of Head and Suppedaneous Center of Pressure Movement in Standing Postural Control

Objective To investigate the relationship and difference between sway of head and suppedaneous center of pressure(COP)movement in standing postural control.Methods Eleven young healthy adults(7 males,4 females;age:28.0±5.6 yr;height:1.68 ± 0.09 m)were asked to stand upright as stable as possible for one minute with both eye-open and eye-closed.Force platform and digital video camera simultaneously recorded the moving trajectory of COP and head.Root mean square(RMS),mean velocity(MV)and mean power frequency(MPF)of COP movement and head sway were selected to evaluate the stability of body.Results(1)RMS,but not MV and MPF,showed significant correlation between the COP movement and head sway(r = 0.75~0.97,P 0.01).(2)The Romberg Quotient of MV was higher in the head sway than in COP movement.Conclusions In evaluating the effect of vision on the standing postural control,the sway of head is more effective.
