Effects of Hydrogen-rich Water on Antioxidant Capacity in Female Judo Athletes in Training

Objective To explore the effects of hydrogen-rich water on antioxidant capacity of femalejudo athletes. Methods Sixteen female judo athletes were randomly divided into an experimental groupand a control group. Athletes in the experimental group took 2 bags of hydrogen-rich water(200 ml/bag)in the morning and afternoon before or during training,while mineral water was given to the con-trol group for a period of 4 weeks. No limitation was set for both groups to drink other water. Besides,the technological confrontation training on the fourteenth morning was chosen as a high-intensity train-ing course and both groups took 2 bags of hydrogen-rich water(200 ml/ bag)before or during the train-ing. On the early morning of the 1st,14 th and 28 th,as well as 1 hour after the high-intensity trainingcourse on the 14 th morning,5 ml venous blood were extracted from the athletes to evaluate their antiox-idant capacity. Results One hour after the heavy load of technical training,the average superoxide dis-mutase(SOD)and total antioxidant capacity of the athletes in the control group were significantly lowerthan those before the training(P0.05),while malonaldehyde(MDA)was significantly higher(P0.05)thanthat before training. However,no significant differences were observed in CAT activity and glutathioneperoxidase(GSH-Px)activity before and after the training in the control group. As for the experimentalgroup,there were no significant changes in all indexes before and after the training. Compared with thecontrol group,the average level of SOD and total antioxidant capacity increased significantly,while thatof MDA decreased significantly(P0.05 for both). During the 4-week training,no significant changes were seen in the indexes of blood on the early morning of the 1st,14 th and 28 th day(P0.05). Conclusions Hydrogen-rich water can significantly lower the high level of free radicals of judo athletes af-ter intensive training,promote the activity of antioxidant enzymes,increase the total antioxidant capacity,thus protecting per-oxidation resulting from heavy load training.
