Effects of Alternating Hypoxia Training at Different Altitudes on Mitochondrial Respiratory Function of Skeletal Muscles in Rats

Objective To explore the effects of alternating hypoxia training at different altitudes onmitochondrial respiratory function of skeletal muscles in rats. Methods Fifty healthy male Wistar ratswere randomly divided into a normoxic control group(C),a normoxic training group(NT),a 2500 m hy-poxia training group(2500 m HT),a 3500 m hypoxia training group(3500 m HT)and a 2500 m-3500 m alternating hypoxia training group(2500 m-3500 m HT),each of 10. Except group C,all the othergroups received the incremental load treadmill training 6 days a week and lived in the attitudes theirgroup name indicated for 4 weeks. The rats of all groups were killed as soon as the training ended,and the whole blood and skeletal muscle samples were taken immediately. Their mitochondria were ex-tracted using the gradient centrifugation. The number of red blood cell(RBC),hemoglobin content(Hb)and the activity of skeletal muscle mitochondrial respiratory chain complex(CⅠ~Ⅳ)were measured. Results(1)The average numbers of RBC and Hb content increased significantly(P0.05,P0.01)in training groups compared with group C,those of group NT were significantly lower than hypoxia traininggroups(P0.01). Compared with 2500 m HT and 3500 m HT groups,those of the 2500 m~3500 mHT group increased significantly(P0.01).(2)Compared with group C,the CⅢ activity of group NT,CⅠactivity in 2500 m HT group,CⅠ and CⅢ activity of 3500 m HT group and CⅠ~Ⅳ activity of2500 m~3500 m HT group increased significantly(P0.05,P0.01). Compared with the NT group,theCⅠ activity of 3500 m HT group,CⅠ and CⅡ activity of 2500 m~3500 m HT group were signifi-cantly increased(P0.01,P0.05). Compared with the 2500 m HT group,the CⅡ activity of 2500 m~3500 m HT group was significantly increased(P0.05). Conclusion The hypoxia training has more ad-vantages than normoxic training in improving skeletal muscle mitochondrial respiratory chain function,and the effect of alternating hypoxia training is the best.
