Atmospheric Water Vapor Retrieval from Landsat-8 TIRS Data Using Split-window Algorithm

Landsat 8,newly lunched Landsat satellite,carried two sensors:Operational Land Imager(OLI)and Thermal Infrared Sensor(TIRS).The TIRS acquires the information of two thermal infrared spectral bands.The Split-Window Covariance-Variance Ratio(SWCVR)algorithm is most popular thermal infrared based algorithm for Atmospheric Water Vapor(AWV)retrieval,which has been successfully applied to low resolution thermal infrared data,such as MODIS(with the resolution of 1km).In this study,we attempt to adapt SWCVR algorithm to Landsat-8Thermal TIRS data with the high resolution,and the validation of the adapted algorithm was performed.As validation with meteorological data,it has a precision of0.43g/cm~2.MOD 05was used to cross validation;the Root Mean Square Error(RMSE)and Mean Absolut Error(MAE)between AWV determined by this proposed method and that given by MOD 05is 0.44g/cm~2 and 0.34g/cm~2 respectively.Therefore the SWCVR algorithm for the WAV retrieval from Landsat-8TIRS data has high accuracy.
