The Electron Microscopic Observation of the Human Round Window Membrane

The normal adult human round window membrane was examined by transmission and scanning electron microscope.The membrane consists of the following 3 layers:(1)the outer epithelial layer, consisting of 1—2 cell layers with an underlying basement membra- ne.Microvilli and cross sections of cilia are detectable on the cell surface.(2)the connective tissue layer,containning fibrocytes, vessels,much collagen and relatively few elastic fibers.(3)the inner epithelial layer,consisting of elongated cells. Investigations of the normal human round window membrane is useful for the study in various clinical otologic problems.
