An Anatomical Observation on the Basal Vein

In order to provide informations for neurosurgeon and data of the Chinese,the source,course,reflux,length,outer cabibre and bran- ches of the basal vein were investigated in 35 cases(70 sides)of the adult embalmed brains. Basal vein was classified into 4 types:the first or normal type occurred in 42.9%;the second type in 32.8%,in which the striate segment was seperated from the cisternal segment;the third type in 15.7%,in which the posterior mesencephalic segment was lacking;the forth type in 8.6%,in which the striate segment was lacking. The average lengths and outer cabibres of the striate segment were 8.1±0.5mm and 1.6±0.1mm;the cisternal segment 25.1±0.8mm and 2.2±0.1mm;and the posterior mesencephalic segment 10.6±0.4mm and 2.5±0.1mm. Basal vein was formed by the union of anterior cerebral vein and deep middle cerebral vein in 46.9%;by the union of anterior cerebral vein and inferior thalamostriatic vein in 34.4%,and by the union of the other veins in 18.8%. Both basal veins emptied into the vein of Galen in 56.7%;into the internal cerebral veins in 26.1%,and into the internal cerebral vein in one side and into the vein of Galen in other side in 16.7%. The percentage of the presence and the outer cabibres of the branches of basal vein were observed and measured.
