Objective To investigate correlation between overexpression of C erbB 2 protein and metastasis of gastric cancer. Methods Immunohistochemical reactivity to C erbB 2 protein was examined in tumor tissues of 30 gastric cancer patients and the free cancer cells in peritoneal lavage was also detected by immunocytochemical method. Results Eleven of 30 cases(36 7%) were positive in expression of C erbB 2. The positive rate of C erbB 2 expression in patients with exfoliated cancer cells (61 5%) were significantly higher then those without exfoliated cancer cells (17 6%). The overexpression of C erbB 2 was also related to the stage of cancer and lymph node metastasis( P 0 05). Conclusion C erbB 2 gene may play a role in the metastasis of gastric cance r.
