Effects of Ginsenoside injection on diaphragm in diabetic rats

Objective To study the effects of Ginsenoside on function and structure of diaphragm in diabetic rats. Methods Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were treated with ig Ginsenoside for 4 weeks. Then diaphragm contractility was assessed using Peak twitch tension(Pt), Maximum tetanic tension(P_0),Force-frequency curve and fatigue index (FI) in vitro diaphragm strip preparations. SOD and MDA in diaphragm were detected and variety of ultrastructure of the rats′ diaphragm were observed. Results Compared with control group,Pt, P_0 and FI in diabetic group decreased significantly (P0.01)and tetanic tension under the stimulus with frequency of 10,20,40,60 and 100 Hz in diabetic group decreased significantly (P0.01);MDA in diabetic group was higher (P0.01) and SOD was lower than those in control group(P0.01). The ultrastructure under electron microscope indicated that diaphragm fibred in diabetic group fracture, Z lines blured, mitochondrions swelled and degenerated. The above changes were inhibited by Ginsenoside. Conclusion Ginsenoside can protect diaphragm in diabetic rats.
