We present a two-particle cluster variation theory to study nematic liquid crystal system confined by parallel planes, in which molecular short range correlations are taken into account The planes align the surface molecules perpendicular to them Numerical calculations are made for a liquid crystal film composed of 20 molecular layers The nematic-isotropic transition temperatures for typical values of the strength of the surface potential are given and the layer dependences of the order parameter are shown
