Analysis on clinical data of 452 hospitalized patients with fever of unknown origin

Objective To investigate the cause of fever in 452 hospitalized patients.Methods The clinical data of 452 patients admitted to hospital because fever were put into two decade group (A group from July 1985 to June 1995,B group from July 1995 to June 2005),and compared and analyzed with retrospective studies.Results The median age of A group patients was younger than that of B group patients (34.85±12.82 years vs 38.00±15.32 years,P=0.021); The mean duration of hospitalization of A group patients was more than that of B group patients (28.54±30.37 days:19.54±14.65 days,P=0.000); After various examinations and specific treatment, the definite diagnosis was finally made in 176 (A group 91.19%) and 248 (B group 95.75%) cases,the cause of 17 and 11 cases (A group 8.81%,B group 4.25%) were still unknown during hospitalization; The number of autoimmune disease in B group was more than that of A group ;the number of autoimmune disease in women more than that in man. There were significant statistical difference in all of above data between two groups.The sum of percentage of infectious disease,autoimmune disease and tumors were over 94% in definite diagnosis.Conclusion There were three kinds of ordinary cause of fever included Infectious disease,autoimmune disease and tumors,infectious diseases were the leading diagnostic category in this study,the numbers of autoimmune disease are increasing,the causes of fever are usually familiar diseases with uncommon presentations rather than rare disorders.
