Primary malignant melanoma of nasal cavity: a case report and review of literatures

Objective To study the clinicopathological feature,histogenesis and differential diagnosis of primary melanoma of the nasal cavity.Methods The histopathological characteristics of a patient with primary malignant melanoma arising from the nasal cavity was analyzed by HE staining,histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques.Results The distribution of melanoma cells showed as sheets and nests.The tumor cells varied in size and shape.Some thick melanin grains were seen in or out of the cells.The expression of HMB45,vimentin and S-100 protein were seen in the tumor cells by immunohistochemical stains.Conclusion Primary malignant melanoma of the nasal cavity is rare.It is difficult to distinguish primary from metastatic lesions based on the histopathology alone.Diagnosis of primary melanoma can be made through physic examination and follow-up the history after metastatic lesions are excluded.
