The value of DAT SPECT imaging in differential diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and vascular parkinsonism

Objective To evaluate the clinical application in differential diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) and vascular parkinsonism (VP) with 99m Tc-TRODAT-1 SPECT dopamine transporter(DAT) imaging.Methods Thirty patients with early stage idiopathic PD,twenty four patients with VP and sixteen healthy volunteers were underwent DAT SPECT brain imaging.The striatum volume(V,cm3) and weight(W,g) were detected by using region of interest(ROI) technique and two mathematical models.Results The volume and weight of bilateral striatum in PD group were lower than those of healthy volunteers and VP group(P0.01,P0.05 respectively).In PD patients, the V and W of striatum in contralateral were significantly lower than ipsilateral striatum to the clinically symptomatic side(P0.01).In addition,the V and W of striatum didn’t show significant difference between VP group and healthy volunteers(P0.05).And there were not difference between contralateral and ipsilateral striatum to the clinically symptomatic side(P0.05).Conclusion 99mTc-TRODAT-1DAT SPECT imaging may be useful method for differential diagnosis of PD and VP.
