A Comparison of the Appellations in Chinese and Vietnamese and the Related Teaching Strategies

YANG Yue (Institute of Chinese and International Studies,Yunnan Normal University,Kunming 650092,China)
Chinese and Vietnamese both belong to the Sino-Tibetan Language Family and have similarities and differences in their appellative systems. The differences make it hard for Vietnamese students to learn such appellations.Through a comparative study of the social and kinship appellations in Chinese and Vietnamese as well as their differences in history, culture, ethnic psychology, economic factors and traditional ideas, this paper explores the related teaching strategies and reaches the conclusion that a comparative analysis should be the foundation, the enhancement of the students' cross-cultural awareness should be the aim while helping the students learn such appellations and improve their communicative competence in different contexts.
