A Study of the Hypotaxis and Parataxis in Old Chinese and Old English

GUO Fu-qiang (School of Foreign Languages,Shihu Campus,University of Science and Technology of Suzhou,Suzhou 215009,China)
The study of hypotaxis and parataxis should not be limited to a comparative analysis of the forms between modern Chinese and modern English. It has been proved that the annotation, sentence punctuation and grammar research of Old Chinese are an exploration of the parataxis of Chinese, while Old English was formed under the influence of Old Greek and Latin with their typical forms, and the study of the hypotaxis of Old English deserves much more efforts.Hypotaxis and parataxis enjoy a long history and have an important position both in English and in Chinese, and a study of the hypotaxis and parataxis in Old Chinese and Old English will have great significance to the study of the two languages and to TCFL.
