Consequential Direction of Viewing Constraints in the Word Order of Adjectives in Mandarin Chinese

MENG Yan-hua(College of Advanced Chinese Training,Beijing Language and Culture University,Beijing 100083,China)
By analyzing the interaction between directions of viewing and the word order pattern of adjectives in resultative object constructions and other similar constructions, this research proposes a two-kind consequential perspective account. One is objective consequential perspective, which is deployed in the sentences representing objective events, while the other is subjective consequential perspective, which is deployed in subjective mental scanning of non-events,such as descriptive sentences or sentences represent imaginary events. The research argues that the seemingly contradictory viewing arrangements-consequential and antisequential direction of viewing-actually lead to a united cognitive operation, that is,consequential direction of viewing constraints in the word order of adjectives.
