A Diachronic Study of the Chinese-language Identity of the Chinese Ethnic Group in Singapore in the Perspective of Acculturation

CAI Ming-Hong;School of International Education,Fujian Normal University;
Under the dual impacts of localization and Westernization,the use of the Chinese language by the Chinese ethnic group in Singapore faces serious challenges.In the past,Singapore carried out a language policy that emphasized utilitarianism rather than emotional appeal led to their further alienation from Chinese culture and a weak identity with the Chinese language.This case is a typical one of the coexistence of language and culture in the perspective of Schumann's theory of acculturation.The solution to such dilemma relies on the favorable policies of the Singapore Government,more emphasis on ethnic characteristics and cultural information without narrow-minded utilitarianism and more attachment to the Chinese language in hope of promoting aprosperous development of the Chinese language in Singapore.
