Visco elastic-visco plastic consolidation model and finite element analysis for vertical drains soft foundation

A visco elastic-viscoplastic model with a double yield surface was introduced to simulate the rheologic properties of soft soil.Based on Biot's consolidation equation,a finite element program was presented to compute the settlement of a soft foundation,which was processed with vertical drains.When the additional effective stress and the settlement caused by preloading are bigger than designed values,we suppose that the preloading can be stopped in the calculation of the preconsolidation for vertical drains.The result of this research shows that this supposal is reasonable.
