The Deduction of Humanity in Slavery:A Study of Narrative of Sojourner Truth: A Northern Slave

PANG Hao-nong;School of Foreign Languages,Shanghai University;
In Narrative of Sojourner Truth: A Northern Slave,Sojourner Truth discloses a wide diversity of virtues and evils in the human relations at the advent of abolition of slavery in New York State,eulogizing Northern black slaves' awakening and strife before the Civil War. The evils,virtues and distortion of human nature can be considered three layers of the evolution of human nature in Northern slavery of America. In a strikingly vivid tone,Truth delineates three types of alienation of humanity in slavery: avarice,callousness and hypocrisy. In the perspectives of Stockholm Syndromes derived from superstition,gratitude,blind loyalty and self-defense,she makes invectives against the unreasonableness of slavery,maintaining that the distortion of human nature will surely result in social distortion. Furthermore,she presents the multi-dimensional virtues of some whites based on justice,piety and semi-evils,highlighting the important functions the virtues of humanity plays in the development of human society and civilization.
