Religious Debate and Sate Identification in Drama of Early Modern England

TAO Jiu-sheng;School of Foreign Languages,Nanchang University;
In the context of European Reformation,England and Vatican opposed to each other. English playwrights participated in religious debate by writing plays,monarchs propagated Protestantism to construct political nation by theatrical stage,and audiences fulfilled state identification through watching plays. Such plays as Hamlet,The Spanish Tragedy and The Duchess of Malfi,condemned Catholic idolatry and Eucharist ritual by using Protestant religious metaphor and witnessing device. In binary opposition,those plays pushed forward the identity construction of the whole nation.
