Hegel's Silent Fourth: Essential Features and Functions
WU Jiang;School of Social Sciences,Tsinghua University;
The silent fourth,an important element in Hegel's Logic,is less mentioned. The essence of the silent fourth is absolute negation or absolute form. As an absolute idea and method,it establishes relations among categories and thus pushes the logic movement forward. As an external reflection,it unites with the immanent reflection between the categories. The silent fourth can not only play the role of choosing,displaying,drawing back,recalling,giving birth,but also represent categories. The "silence"of the silent fourth lies in its being the vanishing mediator,and it erases itself. As the researcher himself,it also holds Logic as an integrity.
