The Scientific Paradigms and Their Shifts in the Western Linguistics

CHEN Zhong-hua;School of Foreign Languages,Yantai University;
On the basis of the re- definition of linguistics and the statement of early 1800 s as the hall-mark of history of western linguistics,this paper presents a stand- point that western linguistics is inclined to have developed towards science. It is held that three scientific paradigms work in( the history of) western linguistics,namely"scientific"linguistics,linguistic science,and scientism. And also shifts in sequence are detected in these three paradigms. It is suggested that,in general,the paradigm of"scientific"linguistics activated in the historical and comparative linguistics,the paradigm of linguistic science marked the main- stream of the structural linguistics,and the paradigm of scientism is a dogma in the generative grammar.
