Progress in Applications of Phosphorescent Transition-Metal Complexes in Bioimaging and Cancer Therapy

Despite the success of cisplatin and its derivatives in cancer therapy, the development of traditional platinum-based anticancer agents is hindered by serious side-effects and easily acquired drug resistance. Recently, non-platinum-based compounds such as Ru(Ⅱ), Ir(Ⅲ), and Re(Ⅰ) complexes with d6 electronic structures have attracted increasing attention due to their varied photophysical and photochemical properties, redox activities, geometrical diversity and good water solubility. This paper reviewed the recent progress in the development of phosphorescent transitionmetal complexes as bioimaging agents and anticancer drugs.
