Porosity characterization in laser welds of Al-Li alloy1420

Aluminum-lithium alloys are ideal lightweight structural materials for aerospace applications.In this paper,a slab CO2 laser was used for welding of Al-Li alloy 1420 with a sheet thickness of 1.9mm.The porosity and its effects on the joint tensile properties were investigated.The results show that the pores mainly locate close to the bond lines in the welding beads.Removal of the surface layers of the alloy by chemically milling both faces of the plates produces welding beads free from pores.The thickness needed to be removed from the surface layers to prevent the formation of pores is 0.1mm in laser welding,much less than the thickness of 0.2~0.3mm in arc welding.The joint tensile strengths and elongations increase significantly when both faces of the sheets to be welded are chemically milled 0.05~0.1mm.
