An OT Analysis of Neutral Tone in Three Chinese Dialects

Wang Jialing Institute of Linguistics of Tianjin Normal University, Tianjin 300074
The neutral tones of Beijing dialect, Shanghai dialect and Urumchi dialect differ in duration, pitch and the changes they cause in the preceding syllables. This paper gives an optimality theoretic analysis of the neutral tone in these three dialects using the same set of constraints but with a different hierarchical ranking for each dialect.
