Reassessment and Reevaluation of A New Grammar of the Chinese National Language

Hu Mingyang Department of Chinese Language and Literature.,Renmin University of China,Beijing 100872
Prof. Li Jinxi's A New Grammar of the Chinese National Language is not only the first pioneering work of its kind, but also the only grammar that has been put to the test of language teaching and Chinese information processing by computers, and proved to be useful and workable. However, it is quite unthinkable to outsiders that since the fifties of the last century,Prof. Li Jinxi's grammar has ever been the target of groundless and unjust ciriticism and attack. His grammar has been branded by rival schools of grammar as a typical work of imitation of English grammar textbooks and as an out-dated work that ought to be discarded and forgotten. It is to be regretted that scientific conscience and scholarship were overridden by partisan fanaticism in an unjust and ruthless competition to gain hegemony even in academic circles, as was the practice not unusual at that time. But now it is time for a fair and just reassessment and reevaluation of Prof. Li's classic work that laid the foundation of the study of Modern Chinese grammar.
