Liu ChengfengThe Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Fudan University, Shanghai 200433
This paper focuses on “overall negative” in Chinese, which many scholars admit that negating the unit “yi+quanitity+noun” implies an overall negative, but the paper argues that it is not necessarily so and the syntactic type, pragmatic number and negative verbs together should be taken into account. Based on this, the paper presents 12 pragmatic reasoning modes and the strength continuum of “overall negative” resulted from the different modes.
