A Pragmatic Study on Modal Adverbs of Certainty in Modern Chinese

Modal adverbs of certainty represent distinct pragmatic features:typical context is dialogue, including debate situation and interpersonal comfort situation etc., both containing Doubt and Denial Complicature; the main speech act functions are exposition, comfort, encouragement, confirmation, consent and promise; some modal adverbs of certainty developed to discourse markers, which have textual functions and interpersonal functions; some others mark the speakers’ position and attitude in dialogue: favor or against; authority, unity or politeness. Their speech act, discourse marker and attitude marker functions are all related to the typical context.
