Wang Lining The Institute of Linguistics, Beijing Language and Culture University, Beijing 100083
Based on the fieldwork on 930 localities from Database for the Linguistic Atlas of Chinese Dialects of BLCU and the other open source materials, this paper describes the phenomena of tonal distribution of Qieyun(切韵) voiceless and voiced initials in Shɑng(上声) tone of Chinese dialects. It points out that this sound change originates in Mandarin, and diffuses throughout the east-southern dialects by funnel evolution norms in distributional map. Furthermore, the east-southern dialects display several sub-types of tonal splitting.
