Quantitative Study of Elastic Word Length in Modern Chinese

This paper reports a quantitative study of elastic word length in modern Chinese , using Xiandai Hanyu Cidian (《现代汉语词典》)(A Dictionary of Modern Chinese , 5th edition ) .1 / 10of non-compound word entries are sampled , totaling 2 , 016word senses.It is found that about 60%- 70% of all Chinese words have elastic lengths , with the percentage of nouns being the highest , at over 80% , and the percentage of verbs being slightly lower than that of nouns.Stylistics also influences the percentage of elastic word length.
