Revisiting Demonstrative Pronouns Concurrently Used as Third Person Pronouns in Xibei Dialect

Wang Huayun College of Liberal Arts , Bohai University , Jinzhou Liaoning 121013
It is observed that proximal and distal demonstrative pronouns are concurrently used as third person pronouns in both the Chinese Northwest dialects and the Chinese during Yuan Dynasty due to the influence from the mid-ancient Altaic languages. In particular , the present Chinese North- west dialects choose the distal demonstrative pronoun " wu "(兀)and"na"(那)to refer to third per- son. This phenomenon mainly lies in the fact that the third person referent is relatively more distant cognitively speaking. This is also true in the modern Altaic languages.
