The Lateral Ending of Subei Dialect

Most variants of Subei(苏北)dialects retain rusheng(入声)finals,five of which have a lateral ending.The paper analyzes the medieval source of lateral ending of Subei dialect,and discusses the evolutive process and origins of lateral ending.The lateral ending has come from t-ending,eventually evolving towards a-ending.Through the influence of mighty pronunciation,a lateral ending can be substituted by aglottal stop ending.
