Study on “qing you bu shan/yan”

In the phrase "qing you bu shan/yan"(擎油不■/滟) as found in the book Linji Lu(临济录),Chinese and Japanese scholars have put their interpretations on the words"shan/yan"(■/滟). Combining comprehensive studies on the phrase"qing you"(擎油) and the context where the phrase occurs with relevant Buddhist background,this paper concludes that the phrase"qing you bu shan/yan"means"to hold the oil pot and not move",namely,"to hold the oil pot firmly to prevent it from shaking".
